Five 19th-Century Authors Every Teen Should Read

20 May 2019

Even though I am not even close to being a young reader, I completely sympathize with the snub they often give historical authors. Sure, there are some, like Jane Eyre, who have stood the test of time – even if it’s mostly in the form of movie and television adaptions.

Current novels are fast-paced and exciting. Where older novels can spend 5 pages describing the room of a scene (and I am not making that up – I counted). This was a problem when I was a teen, which was literally eons ago. And as with so many things, the more fiction improves, the wider the spread between old and new in terms of quality.

With that said, there are a few gems that every person, regardless of age, should be familiar with. By familiar, I mean that they preferably actually read them. At the very least, they should be able to carry on an intelligent conversation about them.

As Jim Rohn said, “Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.”

And besides making you sound interesting, you’ll be doing your part to keep these amazing works of art from becoming extinct and forgotten, which seems like a good cause to me.

Besides, since most are in public domain, they’re totally free!

Following is my list of the top five 19th-century books every person should read while they’re young:

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Moby-Dick by Herman Melville

Great Expectations* by Charles Dickens

Emma* by Jane Austen

How many of those have you read? What would your list look like? Share in the comments below.
